Meet Kerri Vaile, dancer, recent UW grad and our newest addition to the Chicago Dance Supply ensemble. |
On school:
I went to UW, Milwaukee and my first year I was actually an accounting major. I started taking all these courses that were in the curriculum for a BFA like improvisation, partnering and many semesters of modern. I started thinking, “I’m taking all these classes, why not get a degree in it?” and I did.

On Aspirations:
I’m definitely not a ballerina, I’m too short! I love modern: bare feet, the avant-garde. “Anything can follow anything” is what Merce Cunningham once said I love that…for me dance has always been positive. If I’m having a bad day I dance and all my problems seem to go away. I just put all my problems aside and I just focus on dancing…I want to make it into a company. A modern dance company. I really want to…perform. And then years down the road when I can’t perform, teach. I have [choreographed]. Maybe sometime in the future. I do want to perform though. I love performing.

On Dance in Chicago:
You think dance-New York. But the hub of dance is not in New York anymore. Chicago is big. Minneapolis is big. The West Coast is big. Seattle is huge. I didn’t realize moving here that there are so many different smaller companies. I just knew Gus Giordano, Hubbard Street, Joel Hall, the main ones. But there are so many smaller ones. It’s amazing. Zephyr Dance. I did an audition with them. They are amazing. They have interesting movement. Very gestured. I would love to take class with them sometime.

On Public Transportation:
The waiting? I never had to do that. I never had to take public transportation. It’s crazy. I don’t like waiting. I live, like, five minutes away from [Chicago Dance Supply] by car and 45 minutes to an hour by “L”. I was thinking about buying a bike but I never rode in city traffic…I’d probably get hit. Ruin my dance career!

On Green Bay Packers:
I grew up about a block away from the stadium so you kind of have to be a fan. We had a lot of tailgating parties. I cheer for them but I’m not an avid fan. A lot of my family lives in Missouri and they’re huge, huge fans. I’m really close to my family. I talk to my mom every day.

|
On Music:
Three Doors Down. I saw them in concert three times. Phillip Glass. I love him. All kinds of music except for country.
On Food:
I’m a very picky eater. Plain cheese pizza, plain hamburgers. I don’t like ketchup or mustard.
On Books:
[Lately] a lot of self-help books. I just graduated, broke up with my boyfriend, moved here…It’s pretty much like starting over. It’s a huge emotional change. Books seemed to help. [Right now] I have no set plans. Wherever my life leads me that’s where it takes me. I’m glad I’m here. I’m liking it so far.
Welcome Kerri! We’re glad you’re here, too!
