Class Notes: Salsa in Chicago
"Do you dance?"
My student and I were having a conversation after my adult ballet class. I was at first confused when she asked me this question because, of course, she was in the class that I just taught. After a moment's thought, I had to reply: "Well, no." Because what she really asked is if I dance the style of dance that she loves most -- Tango. And no, I can't dance the Tango.
But I call myself a dancer because I have over 30 years of dance training behind me. I just can't Tango or Salsa or do the Viennese Waltz. Yet. But I will someday. I guess you might say that I caught the bug. Thankfully, there are many places to go to take class. It helps if you have a willing partner (thanks Mike!) to learn with you but it's not always necessary. Below are some ideas on where to go to learn to Salsa--my current favorite dance.
allaboutdance.org -- New studio opened up this year by former Luvabull, Jessica Swiggum. Fun vibe at this conveniently located studio located in the heart of Lincoln Park
BallroomChicago.com -- Home of Bob and Penny Urbon, former owners of Chicago Dance. Group and private lessons available on the Northside of Chicago.
Buzz -- Class from 6:30-7:30 on Salsa Wednesday. If you love Latin dancing, don't miss this hot spot.
Chicago Multicultural Dance Center -- Latin Ballroom and Salsasweat is offered in this studio located in Dearborn Station at Printer's Row.
Joel Hall Dance Center -- Located in charming Andersonville and steps away from Chicago Dance Supply. Ray Molina formerly from Arthur Murray offers Salsa and Meringue. Fred-Fred and Ginger-Ginger couples welcomed.
Latin Street Dancing -- Teachers from this studio on LaSalle Street also lead a class every Thursday night at Excalibur.
Green Dolphin Restaurant -- Salsa lessons and dancing every Tuesday at this classy club.
